The Dad’s Army Museum has presented Thetford Town Football Club with a display about why the late Ian lavender chose to wear a scarf, in is role as Private Pike, that incorporated Thetford’s claret and blue colours.

The long running BBC TV comedy was filmed in Thetford from 1968-77 and the museum tells the story of why Thetford was chosen as Walmington-on-Sea and celebrates the programme, which is now regarded as a British institution.

The display features a section of scarf similar to that worn by Pike and tells how Ian Lavender chose the scarf from the props available, as it reminded him of his home city of Birmingham and the colours of Aston Villa. Lavender was not a great football fan but once the story was picked up by the press, Aston Villa invited him to attend, and he went along wearing his Dad’s Army scarf.

Thetford Town Chairman, Nigel Armes said, “Thetford Town attracts visitors from across the Eastern Counties and the club is pleased to help raise awareness of Thetford’s Dad’s Army Museum by putting up the display in the clubhouse. The club sees itself as at the heart of the Thetford community and we are glad to promote a similar minded organisation”.

Stuart Wright, Chairman of the Dad’s Army Museum said, “As a museum we work with numerous organisations in the town. We mention the football club having the same colours as Pike’s scarf when we drive past the club on our popular coach tours of the locations used. The museum is all run by volunteers, so any opportunity we have to publicise the museum is gratefully received”.

Thetford Town Football Club, who play the games at The Recreation Ground in the town are currently top of the Thurlow Nunn League which features teams from across East Anglia.

The Dad’s Army Museum is situated to rear of Thetford Guildhall and reopens for its 2025 season on Saturday 15th March and is open Saturdays until the end of November. Tickets for the location walking and coach tours can be booked from;
